Kenyan human rights lawyer Anita Nyanjong has received the BOBEA Community Leadership Award for her 17-year career dedicated to advancing women's rights and legal reform across Africa.
The recognition celebrates her extensive work in gender equality, access to justice, and reproductive rights.
Among her major contributions is the development of Kenya's first Judicial Bench Book on Human Trafficking, which serves as a landmark resource guiding judicial officers and strengthening justice for survivors.
Beyond her legal contributions, Nyanjong is the founder and chair of the Let Girls Learn Initiative, a Kenyan organisation focused on empowering adolescent girls through education and community advocacy.
Her experience spans senior roles at several international organisations, including Equality Now and the International Commission of Jurists–Kenya.
As a scholar, her doctoral research examines African feminist approaches to justice, aiming to connect academic research with practical legal reform for rural women.
"I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition," Nyanjong said. "I accept it on behalf of the many women, girls, colleagues, mentors, and communities who have walked this journey with me."
She added that her work is driven by the conviction that every woman and girl deserves to live with dignity and realise her full potential. She noted that investing in women strengthens communities and nations, and stated that the award encourages her to keep pushing for more inclusive systems.
Looking toward the future, Nyanjong emphasised that the continent's development relies heavily on supporting the next generation.
"The future of our continent will be shaped by how boldly we invest in women and girls today," she said.
"Their leadership, ideas, and resilience are not only critical to achieving gender equality—they are fundamental to Africa's social and economic transformation."
The BOBEA Community Leadership Award is presented to individuals whose leadership has created a lasting social impact within their communities.
