A Kenyan mother who named her son after President William Ruto shortly after the 2022 General Election has spoken out about the emotional distress her child is allegedly enduring due to persistent bullying at school.
Naomi Diana says she chose the name William Ruto for her son as a gesture of admiration following President Ruto's victory at the polls. At the time, naming new borns after prominent leaders, major events or trending national moments was a common practice among many parents.
However, what was once a proud decision has now become a source of pain for her young son, who is currently in PP2.

According to Naomi, the boy has repeatedly returned home from school upset after being mocked by fellow pupils who associate his name with ongoing political slogans and debates.
"Whenever my son comes home from school, he tells me that during break time other children tease him by calling him 'Ruto Must Go' and 'Wantam'. He tells me, 'Mum, I do not want to continue studying there. Please change my name or take me to another school,'" she narrated.
The distraught mother said the ridicule has affected her son's confidence and enjoyment of school, leaving him emotionally distressed despite his young age.
Naomi further revealed that she now fears for both her safety and that of her child, claiming that the hostility directed at people perceived to support the President has made her increasingly anxious.
"I am surprised that it has become a crime to name your child Ruto. I cannot change his name because I still love and respect President Ruto," she said.
Despite standing by her decision, Naomi admits she is worried about the growing hostility surrounding the name. She appealed for understanding and tolerance, urging Kenyans not to drag children into political differences.
"A child should never suffer because of politics," she said. "My son deserves to learn, play and grow up like any other child."
