Ugandan woman held over infant's death in Eastleigh, accuses child's father of responsibility

A Ugandan woman suspected of killing her 18-month-old daughter before dumping the body at a garage in Nairobi has denied involvement, instead accusing the child’s father of responsibility.

The suspect, Aneti Nabalago, was on Tuesday ordered by Magistrate Jane Mbati to remain in custody for 14 days, until October 13 2025, to allow police to complete investigations.

According to an affidavit filed by DCI officer Abdinasir Bulle of Starehe, members of the public reported the death at Eastleigh North Police Station under OB number 26/25/09/25. The report alleged that Nabalago was behind the killing of her daughter, Angel Margaret Wanjiku, whose body was discovered abandoned at a garage near the Ola petrol station along Juja Road.

The affidavit further stated that Nabalago was arrested by members of the public in Kampala Ndogo, Mathare, before being handed over to Pangani Police Station.

However, in her defence before the court, Nabalago claimed that her daughter fell ill on Monday, September 22.

She said she informed the child’s father, who visited two days later.

“He took the minor to hospital and later to his mother’s house at around 10:30pm. I requested to accompany him, but he refused. The next day, while at work, my neighbour called and told me that my child had been found dead near a blue house,” she told the court.

Investigating officer Bulle opposed her release, arguing that she was at risk of mob justice and, being Ugandan, posed a flight risk.

“I need time to interrogate and record statements from both the suspect and witnesses, conduct a post-mortem on the deceased, and arrange a mental assessment of the suspect before forwarding the file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,” Bulle stated.
