A shocking incident unfolded at a local kibandaski after two university students were beaten for failing to pay a Sh20 food balance.
According to witnesses, the students had ordered a meal worth Sh110 but only paid Sh90, prompting the eatery’s owners to assault them in anger.
A video circulating on X shows the two being beaten, sparking outrage among students and Kenyans who questioned why violence would erupt over such a small amount.
Several users condemned the act, while also criticising the students for taking the business lightly.
“Maybe the 20 bob was the owner’s profit. Apana leta mchezo kwa kazi,” one user wrote.

Another commented, “Gen Zs have a long way to learn — you can’t joke with someone’s hustle, nyaunyo ndiyo answer.”
Others questioned why onlookers failed to intervene, with one user saying, “This is wrong. Imagine if someone just paid the Sh20 — we wouldn’t have all this drama.”
The location and date of the video could not immediately be verified, but online reports link the incident to Karatina, with some suggesting that the students could have been from the nearby Karatina University.
A kibandaski is a small, informal eatery popular among university students and workers for its affordable, home-style meals.
The incident comes just a day after a tout aboard a Rongai-bound matatu was filmed aggressively attacking a passenger over unpaid fare.
In the video, the conductor claims the passenger had “thrown the first punch”, despite not having paid for the ride. When the passenger attempted to alight, the conductor forced him back into the vehicle, shouting, “Huyu jamaa ananipiga na hajalipa fare.”
The scuffle escalated before other passengers intervened.
A woman eventually offered to settle the fare, saying, “Acha nitalipa iyo fare. Mwachane.” Another pleaded, “Aki achaneni na yeye, mutamuumiza.”
The clip ended with the passenger landing blows on the conductor, who disappears from the frame.
The two incidents have renewed debate over rising aggression in everyday interactions, with some subtly linking the tensions to the country’s economic hardships.
