New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani turns heads in Arsenal-themed Eid attire
New York mayor Zohran Mamdani turns heads in Arsenal-themed Eid attire

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani drew attention on Wednesday after appearing in an Arsenal FC-inspired kurta during Eid al-Adha celebrations in the Bronx.

The city’s first Muslim mayor and known Arsenal supporter wore a striking blue-and-black outfit featuring red sleeve stripes and the "Emirates Fly Better" branding linked to the club’s sponsor.

The ensemble, blending football aesthetics with traditional Islamic attire, quickly generated discussion online.

Mamdani, who attended the Eid gathering alongside Democratic Socialist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, used the occasion to reflect on the holiday’s significance and to reiterate his message of solidarity and community-focused governance.

"Today as we honour Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden," Mamdani wrote in a post on X. "It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To extend a hand to those who need it most. I am honoured to be New York City's first Muslim Mayor, and I am determined to lead through solidarity."

He added that his administration is working to ensure every New Yorker can afford groceries, housing, and child care, concluding, "Our solidarity is our strength. Eid Saeed, New York."

Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of Islam’s most significant religious observances. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, before a ram was provided instead. The holiday is marked by communal prayers, acts of charity, family gatherings, and sharing meals with those in need.

Mamdani’s appearance comes weeks after Arsenal secured their first Premier League title in 22 years, a moment that has fuelled celebrations among supporters worldwide.

His outfit reflected a fusion of cultural identity and personal passion, set against his broader political emphasis on affordability and social support for working-class New Yorkers.

Born in Uganda to Indian parents and raised in New York City, he has consistently positioned his administration around issues such as housing, food costs, and childcare.

The look prompted mixed reactions on social media, with users weighing in on the unconventional styling.
