Barack Obama launches six-part podcast on books that changed his worldview

Former US President Barack Obama is set to host a new six-part podcast exploring the books that have shaped his worldview, beliefs, and understanding of society.

The podcast, titled A Great Book with Barack Obama, premieres on Audible on September 24, 2026.

The six-episode series is a collaboration between Audible and Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama.

Each episode will focus on one book, with Obama joined by a guest to discuss its themes, significance, and lasting influence.

“Great books have always helped me figure out who I am and what I believe,” Obama said in a statement announcing the series.

“The six books featured in this series have stayed with me throughout my life, and each one has something to teach us about the human experience.”

The featured titles include The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carré, All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, and All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren.

Obama said the podcast would give him the opportunity to explore why the books continue to resonate and how literature can shape people's understanding of themselves and others.

“For this podcast, I invited some friends to explore why they resonate, how they can shape our understanding of ourselves and each other, and why literature matters now more than ever,” he said.

“I hope listeners will be inspired to discover or rediscover books that change the way they see themselves and the world.”

The new series is the latest project from Higher Ground as the former president continues expanding his presence in media and entertainment. The company has produced films, documentaries, and podcasts, including Renegades: Born in the USA, Obama's earlier podcast with musician Bruce Springsteen.

The guests joining Obama in the new series have yet to be announced, adding to the anticipation ahead of its September premiere.

Obama has long been known for his love of books and regularly shares reading recommendations with the public.

His annual reading lists have become a popular tradition, with his picks often attracting widespread attention.
