Like many upcoming artists, Doreen Ndenga faced her fair share of struggles in the music industry. But her unwavering faith, resilience, and determination saw her rise to enjoy the fruits of her labour, including becoming a TV host. She shares her incredible journey with SILAS NYAMWEYA.

Briefly introduce yourself.

I was born in Western Kenya and raised in Nairobi. I am a born-again Christian, the eldest of three siblings, an award-winning live and recording gospel artist, a teacher of the Word of God, a former host at Elimu TV, a songwriter, a content creator, and a music director.

How and when did you discover your singing talent?

I discovered my musical talent when I was seven years old while attending Sunday school. My Sunday school teacher played a pivotal role in this discovery. He encouraged me to sing regularly in church and even gave me songs to practice at home. One day, he asked me to lead the church choir, which consisted of adults. That moment was a turning point and solidified my confidence in my ability to sing.

When did you record your first song?

I recorded my first song in 2017. It was an exhilarating experience, especially hearing my voice professionally recorded for the first time. I remember the producer asking me, “Uko na uhakika haujawahi record wimbo mwingine sababu naona kama unajua kuimba sana,” His words encouraged me and affirmed that I was on the right path.

How many songs have you released so far?

I have released four songs: None Like You, Yesu Akupenda, Wewe Mkombozi, and Zaidi ya Mshindi. Among them, Wewe Mkombozi and Zaidi ya Mshindi have performed exceptionally well.

What else do you do besides singing?

I am a nurse. I also enjoy hosting TV shows, creating content, teaching the Word of God, and directing music.

How do you manage stress and avoid unnecessary burdens?

I live by Matthew 6:34, which reminds me not to worry about tomorrow. Whatever I cannot handle, I surrender to God in prayer and let Him take control. I focus on being happy, enjoying life, and not taking things too seriously.

Any memorable experience in your career?

One of my most unforgettable experiences happened on a matatu. The vehicle was playing a gospel video mix on its TV screen, and suddenly, my song Wewe Mkombozi came on. A woman seated next to me began expressing how much she loved the song, not knowing I was the artist behind it. She even remarked, “The singer of this song looks exactly like you!” We both laughed as she alighted. That moment was priceless.

How has your music journey been?

It has been a mixture of challenges and triumphs. In the beginning, I faced significant financial struggles, as music requires substantial investment to produce and promote. However, the rewards have been immense. Music has taken me to different countries, opened doors for opportunities like TV hosting and content creation, connected me with people, and even earned me recognition, including winning the Upcoming Artist of the Year trophy at the Tukuza Awards.

Your parting shot?

Never despise humble beginnings. You never know who you can become through those early stages of struggle. Pray earnestly, work hard, and let God handle the rest.
