Kenya’s iconic music production house, Ogopa Deejays, is back in the spotlight, loudly and proudly. After years of keeping a low profile, the legendary hitmakers are making it clear, they never truly left.
Once the unrivalled kings of East Africa’s pop and urban music in the early 2000s, Ogopa Deejays built a sound that defined a generation.
Their beats dominated airwaves and dancefloors across the region, creating a music legacy that still echoes today.
Ogopa Deejays has returned with Nimezama, a track that feels less like a casual release and more like a statement.
The new sound is a polished, high-quality production featuring the talented Mumbua, with songwriting credits shared between her and the mastermind, Lucas Bikedo.
Crafted at the legendary Ogopa Studios, Nimezama is a sonic treat.
The audio’s crispness is courtesy of Lucas’s expert mixing and mastering, a man known for letting his craft do the talking.
True to the Ogopa brand, the video was also produced in-house, keeping everything under one creative roof.
Mumbua, already a rising star with songs like Karibia, Hizi ni Gani, and Skiza, brings her signature vocal style to the track.
Her collaboration with Ogopa delivers a vibe that is both fresh and nostalgic, exactly what longtime fans have been craving.
For the uninitiated, Ogopa Deejays is more than just a studio, it is a legacy.
Formed in the late 1990s, the team was behind the meteoric rise of iconic acts like Nameless, E-Sir, Chameleone, Redsan, Avril, Kleptomaniax, Mr. Lenny, and Tattuu.
While they shaped Kenya’s modern sound, Ogopa's crew remained purposefully in the background.
“We never wanted people to know who we are, as they would start to idolise us by calling us celebs,” Lucas once told The Standard. “It should not be about us but about the people we make. That’s what gives us fulfilment.”
