Kenyans celebrate Father's Day with gifts, food, and heartfelt tributes

Father’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to celebrating dads, father figures, and the vital roles they play in our lives.

It’s a day to honour the unique bonds shared with paternal figures and to recognize their influence in both families and society.

Like Mother’s Day, and in some cultures, Siblings Day and Grandparents’ Day, Father’s Day is observed globally, though dates and traditions vary.

This year was no different as Kenyans marked the occasion with gifts, heartfelt messages, and acts of love.

Speaking to 22-year-old Tania Omusale, she shared her plans for celebrating her dad.

“Father’s Day to me means a day we can celebrate the father figures in our lives. On Father’s Day, we will start the day by going to church since it’s on a Sunday. My father loves food, so we will prepare his favorite meal. We will get him a gift as his children to appreciate the love and support he has shown us in our lives,” she said.

Tania also reflected on key lessons she has learned from her father over the years.

“I have learnt a lot from my father, including prayer works and to always be hardworking. My father has always encouraged us regarding the importance of education, and this is the best gift he gave us,” Omusale concluded.

For those unable to be with their dads in person, social media became a space to express love through messages, phone calls, and gifts sent from afar.

Julius Mukoka, 23, shared his plans for celebrating his father virtually.

“Since I can’t visit my father, I will call him and have a conversation with him. He always advises me and I enjoy having a man talk with him,” he said.

He added, “I appreciate my father for the sacrifice he has made for me. For me to reach this level, I truly owe it to him.”

In Kenya, Father’s Day continues to hold deep meaning, offering families a dedicated moment to express gratitude for the fathers and father figures who contribute significantly to their lives and to the community.

While celebrations may vary from home to home, the message remains clear: Father’s Day is a time to honour, reflect, and connect, celebrated with love and respect across the country.
