PHOTOS: Ann Waiguru elated as son Ian weds in colourful traditional ceremony

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru recently marked a major family milestone as her son Ian and his partner Joanne held their traditional wedding ceremony in an intimate celebration attended by close family and friends.

The event featured two key Agĩkũyũ marriage rites: the Ruracio, the formal dowry agreement, and the Ngurario, the final traditional ceremony that seals the union.

Waiguru shared her joy publicly, expressing deep emotion at witnessing her son’s transition into marriage and celebrating the couple’s commitment and cultural grounding.

“My heart is filled with gratitude and joy as we celebrated the beautiful Ruracio and Ngurario ceremony of our son, Ian, and Joanne. As a mother, witnessing this important milestone in your journey together was a truly cherished blessing. Seeing the love, commitment, and happiness you share fills me with great pride and hope for the future that lies ahead for both of you,” she wrote.

She added, “Congratulations, Joanne and Ian. May your relationship continue to be anchored in faith, love, mutual respect, and understanding. May God guide your path, strengthen your bond, and bless you abundantly in the days ahead. With love and prayers for a lifetime of happiness and togetherness.”

Ian wore a crème white Kaunda suit accented with culturally inspired brown detailing, while Joanne opted for a coordinated off-shoulder dress paired with a brown feathery fan. Bridesmaids and groomsmen were dressed in brown traditional patterned outfits.

Waiguru appeared in an elegant orange ensemble and was seen enjoying the celebration alongside guests.

The event was attended by family, friends, and several leaders, including Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, nominated Senator Veronica Maina, Kirinyaga Central MP Joseph Gitari, Kajiado Women Rep Leah Sankaire, Kiambu Women Rep Ann Muratha, Nyeri MP Rahab Mukami, Rachael Shebesh, Laikipia Women Rep Jane Kagiri, among others.

Earlier this year, Waiguru had taken to social media to celebrate Ian during his traditional engagement ceremony attended by close family and friends.
