Emerging designers celebrate global cultures at Nairobi fashion showcase

A Benin-inspired collection paying tribute to the legendary Dahomey Women Warriors emerged as the overall winner at the third Annual Global Fusion Fashion Show held in Nairobi.

Hosted by Delight Fashion School at Iconic Plaza Hotel, the competition featured nine teams of emerging designers, each presenting collections inspired by cultures from around the world.

The winning collection impressed judges with its detailed craftsmanship, cultural storytelling, and choreographed runway presentation.

An India-inspired collection that blended contemporary silhouettes with traditional aesthetics finished second, while a Vietnam-inspired showcase celebrating the country's textile heritage placed third.

The top three teams received cash prizes of Sh20,000, Sh17,000, and Sh15,000, respectively, in addition to gift hampers from event partners.

A judging panel comprising fashion designers Kavulani, D.K, and Eva Wambutu assessed the collections on creativity, craftsmanship, originality, cultural interpretation, and runway presentation.

Held under the theme Celebrating Cultural Fusion, the event showcased fashion as a tool for preserving cultural heritage while giving emerging East African designers a platform to demonstrate their creativity.

"Global Fusion Fashion Show continues to demonstrate that fashion has the power to preserve culture, inspire creativity, and unite communities," the organisers said in a statement.

"Our designers did not simply showcase clothing. They told stories, honoured histories, and proved that East African fashion deserves a place on the world stage."

Organisers said preparations are already underway for an expanded 2027 edition, which they expect will feature greater international participation.

The Dahomey Women Warriors, historically known as the Agojie, were an all-female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin) active from the 17th to the late 19th century.

Renowned for their formidable discipline, tactical prowess, and fierce independence, their historical legacy has increasingly served as a vibrant source of inspiration for modern African art, cinema, and runway design.
