The media fraternity is in mourning following the sudden death of Festus Amimo, the respected head of KBC’s Mayienga FM and one of the most recognisable Luo-language radio voices of his generation.

Amimo, 45, passed away on Sunday, December 7, sending shockwaves across newsrooms, government offices and the entertainment industry.

His rich baritone defined the popular morning show Gari Mokinyi, where his incisive interviews and calm, empathetic handling of national issues earned him a devoted audience.

Away from the studio, he served as chairperson of the Luo Journalists Association, mentoring young reporters and helping strengthen professional networks among Luo-speaking journalists.

KBC Managing Director Agnes Kalekye led the tributes, describing him as “a warm soul and true friend whose kindness touched many,” adding that the station had lost a pillar whose impact shaped the very heart of the national broadcaster.

Leaders from across the country also joined in mourning.

Siaya Governor James Orengo praised his calm demeanour and exceptional skill.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of amimo calm collected and truly gifted soul whose loss is a heavy blow to the entire media fraternity," Orengo said.

"Your Sessions on air were exceptional marked by grace depth and unwavering respect for every guest," he added.

Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda followed with his tribute.

"As we come to terms with this untimely and painfully loss his family and colleagues remain in our thoughts and prayers."

Top politicians from Nyanza also posted emotional messages, calling him “a shining star gone too soon.”

As friends, fans, colleagues and leaders continue to mourn, messages of condolence continue to flow online, celebrating a life well lived.

Photos shared across social media capture the personality and legacy of Festus Amimo, a man whose voice shaped an entire generation of listeners and whose absence leaves a painful silence across the airwaves.
