Key witness reveals Nakuru serial killer stole his knife, allegedly used it in murders

A chilling testimony in the ongoing murder trial of Ezekiel Sakwa has linked the accused to the brutal deaths of four women in Nakuru and Rongai.

A key witness claimed that Sakwa used a stolen kitchen knife in the killings.

Testifying before Justice Julius Nangea, David Asaya recounted how Sakwa, whom he had never met before, entered his home in Ruai, Nairobi, on July 29, 2024, pretending to be a relative of his housemates, Eliud and Evans.

“He said they were his brothers. I confirmed with them and allowed him to come in and wait,” Asaya told the court.

Out of compassion, Asaya offered Sakwa temporary shelter after learning he had nowhere to stay in Nairobi. However, what began as a kind gesture soon turned sinister.

“On the third day, I left Sakwa alone in the house. When I returned, the gate was wide open, a lamb had a broken leg, and things were out of place,” Asaya said.

He noticed that several items were missing, including kitchen utensils, clothes, and most notably, his kitchen knife. Sakwa had vanished without a word.

“I strongly suspected he was responsible. When I saw him later on the news being arrested over murders, I went straight to the police and gave my statement,” Asaya added.

A forensic report has since linked the stolen knife to some of the murders, strengthening the prosecution’s case.

Another witness, Dorcas Wairimu, shared details of her final interaction with one of the victims, Virginia Njeri, who was among the four women Sakwa is accused of killing.

“She told me she was going for prayers at Menengai Crater on August 5. Her phone later went off, and she didn’t show up at work,” Wairimu said.

On August 8, Wairimu received a call from Njeri’s daughter, who had heard that her mother was allegedly being held at Kaptembwa Police Station.

Wairimu rushed there and was shown Njeri’s ID and personal documents, confirming they belonged to her friend.

“Later, I learnt she had been killed,” she said emotionally.

Njeri’s daughter also testified, stating that her mother left for work on the day she disappeared and never returned. The family only learned about her death through Njeri’s mother (the victim’s grandmother).

A post-mortem report revealed that Virginia had sustained severe head injuries and showed signs of sexual assault.

Ezekiel Sakwa faces multiple counts of murder and sexual assault in connection with the deaths of Alice Ayuma, Virginia Njeri, Florence Mwalimu and Moraa Mogambi.

The alleged murders occurred between July 13 and August 7, 2024, in Rongai and Nakuru West sub-counties.

Investigators allege that Sakwa not only killed the women but also sexually assaulted them prior to their deaths.

The trial continues as more witnesses are expected to testify.
