Video: Police officer accidentally falls into grave holding coffin during colleagues' burial

What was meant to be a solemn and dignified send-off for a fallen police officer turned into a moment of chaos and embarrassment after one of the uniformed officers accidentally slipped and fell into the open grave.

The dramatic incident, captured in an undated video, unfolded during what appeared to be a full ceremonial burial. Several officers in navy blue uniforms, white gloves, and polished black shoes were carefully lowering a gleaming white casket, fitted with golden handles, into the grave using a mechanical lowering device.

A red carpet had been laid around the site as a sign of honour and order.

However, as the officers tried to balance the casket, the lowering gear seemed to malfunction. Startled by the unexpected tilt, the officers hastily released the coffin to avoid being pulled in, except for one.

In a moment that has now gone viral, the unidentified officer clung tightly to the casket and was pulled into the grave before stunned colleagues could react. Shouts of panic filled the air as officers scrambled to retrieve their colleague, eventually pulling him out to murmurs of "pole, pole" from sympathisers at the site.

Several officers were later seen inspecting the straps on the lowering gear, seemingly trying to figure out what had gone wrong.

Online, Kenyans have had a field day reacting to the video-some with sympathy, others with cultural worry, and many with humour.

"A faulty lowering gear. I hope he was not hurt," commented @real_dismas on X.

"Kwa mila zetu, hiyo ni ishara mbaya. Lazima afanyiwe tambiko," added @AderaJacob, echoing traditional fears.

"He held on to the coffin like a rifle. True comrade," joked @DukeOfSavannah, while @LuckyVeejay noted, "Jamaa anakwamilia jeneza na mwenzake wameachilia."

The incident comes months after a tragic event in Marenga, Busia County, where a 28-year-old choir master, Emmanuel Makokha, collapsed and fell into a grave mid-ceremony. His death left the village divided between cultural interpretations and spiritual questions.

As for the police burial, the fallen officer was eventually laid to rest-with his comrade, perhaps unintentionally, offering one final act of solidarity.
