The political world is mourning the loss of George Oduor, the steadfast and loyal bodyguard of ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Oduor, who succumbed to a short illness, was more than just a security aide; he was a trusted confidant, a rock of unwavering support, and a silent force through Kenya’s turbulent political landscape.

In a heartfelt tribute, Raila Odinga reflected on their decades-long bond, describing Oduor as a pillar of strength throughout his political journey.

“George has been a part of Jaramogi's and my family since the late '80s. We have stood, fallen, and risen together,” Raila wrote.

“He was vigilant, calm, confident, and extremely professional—a dependable rock by my side through some of the most tumultuous periods of my life. His absence will be felt deeply,” he added.

Those who knew him, Oduor was more than a bodyguard; he was a reassuring presence, always standing by Raila’s side through triumphs and setbacks.

He became so integral to the former Prime Minister’s public persona that Kenyans often joked he had an uncanny ability to sense danger before it emerged.

Journalist and political consultant Dennis Onsarigo, who had known Oduor for 18 years, recalled their first meeting under the directive of then-Commissioner of Police Major General Hussein Ali.

That moment marked the beginning of a professional relationship built on trust and duty.

“The second significant encounter with him was when I urgently needed to relay a critical message—a message that could have changed the trajectory of this country’s political landscape 18 years ago,” Onsarigo reminisced, hinting at Oduor’s crucial role behind the scenes.

Onsarigo also spoke of Oduor’s resilience in moments of political defeat, remembering him as the man who always found the words to reignite hope after bitter losses.

“After three election losses, I sat with George and saw a man with immense resilience in the face of crushing defeat. And every time we 'lost,' he would tell me, 'Bro, we start again. Kaa karibu na Mzee,'” he recalled.

ODM party extended its condolences, honouring Oduor as a dedicated aide whose presence will be deeply missed.

“We mourn the passing of Mr. George Oduor, the longest-serving aide to our Party Leader @RailaOdinga. A respectful, sociable, and highly professional security officer. We shall miss him dearly. To our Party Leader, pole sana for your loss,” ODM wrote.

Siaya Governor James Orengo also paid tribute, recognising Oduor’s patience and professionalism in the high-pressure world of politics.

“George tolerated all the fuss that came with being around politics, always sober and never lost his mind. He was the true gentleman of VIP protection. Oduor was exactly who we needed at the most difficult and trying moments. We will dearly miss him,” Orengo wrote.

Lang’ata MP Phelix Jalang’o shared a message alongside a photo of Oduor: “Served well… Rest well George!”
