Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen found himself at the center of a political storm on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, after appearing before the Senate to address the controversial death of Albert Ojwang, a young man who allegedly died while in police custody.
The highly anticipated session was expected to shed light on the tragedy and assure the public of accountability. Instead, it ignited national outrage.
“Unfortunately, the Constitution did not give me eyes to see who is culpable,” Murkomen told senators.
“Those eyes have been given to investigative authorities. We will ensure there is no interference, shielding, or cover-up from the Executive or IPOA.”
While the CS’s comments were intended to reinforce due process, they were met with backlash, particularly from Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who delivered a rare, emotional rebuke in the chamber.
Boni Khalwale: CS Murkomen, can you immediately resign? You're unfit to hold that docket. You have the audacity to tell Kenyans you didn’t see, you don’t know. You are yet to raise a son who is 31 years old. CS Murkomen. Please, I beg you. It’s not personal but you don’t know… pic.twitter.com/oAfepC1I9b

“CS Murkomen, you have the audacity to face the Parliament of Kenya and tell Kenyans that you don’t see and don’t know? For the respect of this young man, you’re yet to raise a child to the age of 31—can you immediately resign? You are not fit to hold that docket,” Khalwale charged.
His fiery remarks received loud applause in the Senate and quickly went viral online, resonating with Kenyans who feel increasingly frustrated by a system they see as sympathetic, yet rarely accountable.
@Anyole said, "Kipchumba Murkomen must resign. Kudos to @DrBKhalwale for pulling the mask off."
@THIGA GEORGE reiterated, "I agree. He should resign. Since the murder happened, he’s remained silent, and now comes to the Senate showing ignorance."
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since revealed that CCTV footage at Nairobi’s Central Police Station was tampered with, intensifying scrutiny over the death of X influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Wanjiku made the disclosure while appearing alongside Murkomen, stating that the footage from the Officer Commanding Station (OCS)'s office had been interfered with.
“The key findings were as follows: the CCTV systems located at the OCS office had been interfered with,” Wanjiku told the legislators.
She further confirmed that a post-mortem conducted on June 10, 2025, showed Ojwang’ died from severe injuries that contradict earlier police claims of suicide.
