Google has officially launched the Pixel Tag, entering the smart location tracker market to compete directly with Apple's AirTag and Samsung's Galaxy SmartTag.
Unveiled during Google's annual hardware showcase alongside its latest flagship smartphone lineup, the Sh3,700 ($29) standalone accessory connects directly to the tech giant's expanded Find Hub crowdsourced tracking network.
According to Google's official blog, the device is constructed from stainless steel with an IP67 water and dust resistance rating, featuring an integrated high-volume speaker for proximity audio alerts.
Unlike its main market competitors, the Pixel Tag incorporates a physical multi-function button directly on its chassis.
When pressed, this button triggers an audible ringtone on a paired smartphone, helping users easily locate misplaced mobile devices within household range.
Under the hood, the hardware leverages Bluetooth 6 and Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology to deliver precise directional guidance through compatible Android smartphones.
Power is supplied via a standard user-replaceable battery, which is engineered to provide up to one full year of continuous operation under normal daily usage conditions.
Speaking on the network expansion during the product announcement, Google stated, "Pixel Tag relies on our Find Hub network, tapping into more than a billion active Android devices worldwide to help you locate everyday items quickly and securely."
Security and anti-stalking features have been integrated across operating systems to mitigate unauthorised tracking risks.
The device includes cross-platform unwanted tracker alerts developed in collaboration with Apple, ensuring both Android and iOS users receive immediate background notifications if an unrecognised tag travels with them over time.
Addressing data protection and user privacy safeguards, Google explained, "Location data processed through Find Hub remains end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that neither Google nor third parties can view private tracking activity or identify crowd network contributor devices."
The Pixel Tag is priced at Sh3,700 ($29) for a single tracker unit and Sh12,791 ($99) for a convenience four-pack bundle.
Pre-orders have opened across digital storefronts, with widespread retail availability and consumer deliveries scheduled to begin in November.
