Confusion and disbelief engulfed the family of the late Rachel Wandeto after they arrived at Montezuma Funeral Home, only to learn that the burial ceremony had been suspended following a court order.
Wandeto’s body was scheduled to leave Montezuma Funeral Home in Kabati ahead of her burial at Kabumbu village.
However, mourners were later informed that the burial could not proceed after the deceased’s husband, Peter Njaramba Njeri, obtained a court order stopping the interment.
The announcement left residents shocked, with many having gathered at Kerugoya Stadium since early morning awaiting the ceremony.
Kikuyu influencer Karangu Muraya, who has been closely involved in Rachel Wandeto’s sendoff preparations, said mourners had fully prepared to receive the body before the family was informed of the postponement.
“We all woke up early to attend the burial of our friend Rachel Wandeto, but unfortunately things didn't go as we wanted.... We are hoping that both parties will soon come to an agreement and settle the disputes between them, and our friend will be laid to rest. To the family and friends of Rachel, poleni sana.”
Some relatives also expressed disappointment over the unexpected turn of events.
“We never expected this; we were expecting the husband and the two children to be here, especially after we gave him Sh70,000 for transport yesterday,” one relative told a local publication.
Akorino bishops had assembled at Kerugoya Stadium in Kirinyaga, singing hymns and occasionally breaking into song and dance as they waited for the body’s arrival.
A member of the burial committee said the husband had earlier appeared to support the burial arrangements.
“The man was here with Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha and agreed there would be no court battles. We are wondering what changed,” the official said.
Wandeto died after she was attacked with acid by unknown assailants.
