VIDEO: Kilifi Governor Mung’aro flees after man stormed podium mid-speech

A man breached security and lunged toward Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro during Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1.

The incident occurred at Marafa Polytechnic Grounds in Magarini, with footage of the dramatic moment widely circulating on social media.

In a video seen by TNX Africa, Governor Mung’aro was forced to step back abruptly after a man charged toward the main podium while he was addressing residents.

Bodyguards swiftly intervened, tackling and subduing the man before carrying him away.

Attendees could be heard shouting in confusion, with one asking, “Ni nini huyo?”

As security officers escorted the man away, Governor Mung’aro urged them not to use force.

“Msimpige! Mwache!” he said.

In a later Facebook post, the man, identified as Baraka Chula, shared an apology to the Governor and the County.

"Today during the Madaraka Day celebrations in Magarini, I acted out of frustration after trying unsuccessfully to get an opportunity to present my M-Card innovation. I sincerely apologize to Governor Gideon Mung'aro, the security team, event organizers, and the people of Kilifi County," he said.

"My actions were not meant to show disrespect or cause disruption. I have been under pressure as many people keep asking about the progress of M-Card, and I was simply seeking a chance to have my innovation heard. I respect Governor Mung'aro and appreciate the work he is doing for the youth and the development of Kilifi County. I humbly ask for forgiveness and understanding from everyone affected by my actions," he added.

The incident comes just days after a man managed to bypass security and reach President William Ruto while he was addressing residents.

Footage seen by TNX Africa showed the intruder, who was carrying a Bible, sprinting toward the podium and briefly interrupting the President’s speech.

Before officers from the Presidential Escort Unit wrestled him away, he managed to speak into the microphone, faintly saying, “Nimetoka Nairobi” (I have come from Nairobi).

Security personnel quickly pinned the man to the ground and dragged him away from the stage.

As the scuffle unfolded, President Ruto appeared to signal to officers to handle the situation gently, seemingly indicating a willingness to hear the man out.

“Wachana na yeye! Wewe, leave this man alone!” Ruto pleaded, although the officers appeared to ignore the instruction.

After order was restored, the President diffused the tension with humour and even praised the intruder’s boldness.

“Huyo kijana hana shida. Nafikiri amejifunza kutokana na Fikirini Jacobs kwamba nafasi ikipatikana, asiipoteze,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
