The Polygamist: Why South African Netflix hit series has everyone talking

The breakout South African television series The Polygamist is gaining momentum on streaming platforms, with a classic serving of high-stakes drama built around wealth, betrayal and revenge.

But what is all the buzz about? And why should you watch it?

At the centre of the story is Joyce, a woman who appears to have it all, a polished public image, a luxurious lifestyle, and a marriage to Jonasi, a charismatic CEO whose influence and fortune seem beyond reproach.

That illusion begins to unravel when cracks emerge in Jonasi’s carefully constructed façade. Joyce is forced into a painful reality; she is not the only woman in his life.

Secret wives, a long-term mistress and a younger girlfriend are revealed, each stepping forward to claim their place in his life and in the vast empire he controls.

What follows is a painful, calculated power struggle. The women turn on one another and on Jonasi in a ruthless fight for control.

Uneasy alliances form, and secrets become currency as each tries to expose his financial troubles while protecting her own future.

Each woman brings a distinct approach to the escalating conflict. Joyce leans on her public reputation and social influence, while the others rely on legal pressure, strategic manipulation or sheer ambition. As loyalties shift and buried truths resurface, the battle moves beyond private spaces into boardrooms and the public eye.

Against a backdrop of privilege and expectation, the series peels back the glamour of elite life to reveal the cost of secrecy, desire and survival.

As schemes intensify and alliances fracture, the struggle for control forces each character to confront how far they are willing to go to win.

Based on the 2012 debut novel by Zimbabwean author Sukoluhle “Sue” Nyathi, the story has found new life on screen after years of setbacks in publishing. Nyathi began writing the novel at 20, eventually self-publishing it after repeated rejections, before it later climbed to number one on Netflix in South Africa and gained international attention.

Her screenwriting journey gained traction in 2015 when director Rolie Nikiwe invited her to join the writing team for the e.tv drama Matatiele, after recognising the adaptation potential in The Polygamist.

So, if you can, watch it.

If you can't, make time.
