A pharmaceutical technician who has worked at the Aga Khan University Hospital for three years has been released on a cash bail of Sh1 million after a CCTV footage showed him picking drugs and stashing them inside a bag.
Mark Onyango Odongo, 41, is alleged to have stolen the medicines worth Sh6,465,960 on various dates between November 1, 2023 and February 28, 2026, at the hospital’s Ruai branch in Ruai sub-county in Nairobi County.
According to court documents, Odongo, as an employee of the hospital, had access to the medicines by virtue of his position. George Ndirangu, an auditor at the facility, reported the matter to Ruai Police Station on behalf of the hospital management under OB Number 24/03/2026.
The report highlighted discrepancies in the stock of medicines under Odongo’s custody that could not be accounted for.
Odongo had reportedly been employed at the Aga Khan University Hospital across its Rongai, Donholm, and Ruai branches since 2023.
He was summoned to the audit meeting to explain the negative variances in stock but failed to appear before the relevant committee. Instead, he absconded from work. On March 4, 2026, he tendered a handwritten resignation letter without providing any explanation for his departure.
The management then was prompted to review CCTV footage which allegedly captured Odongo on ten separate occasions picking drugs and concealing them in his bag in the evenings before leaving the premises. These incidents reportedly occurred between April 2025 and February 2026.
He was arraigned before Makadara court and was granted bail of Sh1 million cash. The case is scheduled for hearing on September.
