Veteran coach Abdallah Juma succumbs to illness

Veteran Kenyan football coach Abdallah Juma has passed away following a long illness involving diabetes and pancreatic cancer. His death comes only weeks after his family, friends and members of the football community launched an appeal for financial assistance to support his medical treatment after his health worsened, leaving him unable to walk.

Juma was regarded as one of Kenya's most accomplished football tacticians, spending more than 20 years coaching in both the Kenyan Premier League and the National Super League.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammd announced the death of the veteran coach, paying tribute to his successful career and lasting influence on Kenyan football.

‘’We mourn the loss of coach Juma Abdallah, a true pillar of Kenyan football renowned tactician and a mentor whose impact went beyond the pitch. He nurtured and inspired many players, built teams with character and served the game with passion,” read the statement.

During his coaching career, Juma took charge of several clubs, among them Thika United, KCB FC, Bidco United, Chemelil Sugar, Western Stima, FC Talanta, Vihiga Bullets and Murang'a SEAL. He also served as assistant coach at AFC Leopards.

One of the highlights of his career came at KCB, where he was appointed head coach before the 2013 Kenyan Premier League campaign. He transformed the Bankers into one of the league's strongest teams, a feat that earned him the Kenyan Premier League Coach of the Year award.

Juma also earned widespread recognition for his contribution to player development at Thika United, a club known for producing young football talent. He later guided several other top-flight teams, gaining respect for his composed leadership style and extensive experience.

In January 2024, he made a return to the FKF Premier League after being named head coach of newly promoted Murang'a SEAL. He assumed the role midway through the season with the responsibility of helping the club avoid relegation after a challenging start to life in the top flight.

Over the years, he also coached Chemelil Sugar, Western Stima, Bidco United, FC Talanta and Vihiga Bullets, building a reputation for accepting challenging coaching roles while nurturing emerging local players. He additionally served as assistant coach at AFC Leopards during the 2014 season.
