Police officer dies after collapsing during Madaraka Day parade in Wajir

A Madaraka Day celebration in Wajir ended in tragedy after a police officer collapsed and died while participating in the national parade.

Police Constable Hassan Juma Moyo was carrying out his parade duties when he suddenly collapsed during the event.

News of his death was confirmed by Kwale Woman Representative Fatuma Masito through her social media platforms.

"It is with great sadness, on behalf of myself, my family and the people of Kwale County, that I have received the news of the death of Hassan Juma Moyo, a police officer who dedicated himself to serving our nation until his last breath. He suddenly passed away while on duty during the national Madaraka Day celebrations at Wajir Stadium," she said.

Moyo was attached to a local tactical unit and was among the security officers deployed to provide security during the event attended by hundreds of residents, government officials and President William Ruto.

According to local media reports, the officer fell at around 9:05 a.m., shortly after taking part in the march-past at Wajir Stadium.

He was rushed to Wajir County Referral Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him.

However, Constable Moyo was pronounced dead at approximately 10 a.m.

The incident cast a sombre mood over a day that was otherwise meant to celebrate national unity, achievement and pride.

The tragedy, however, is not an isolated case.

Several incidents involving police and security officers collapsing during major state functions have been reported in Kenya over the years.

On December 1 last year, an administrator collapsed at Embakasi National Police College during a graduation ceremony presided over by President Ruto. In another incident, a Navy officer fainted during Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu in 2021.

More recently, in February 2026, detectives launched investigations into the sudden death of another police officer at State House, Mombasa, renewing calls for reforms aimed at improving the welfare of officers serving in the country's security agencies.
