Michael Warutere from Riara Springs Academy is this year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) top candidate, scoring 428 marks out of 500. 

Warutere, while speaking on KTN News, said he expected to perform well but not emerge at the top of the country.

"I'm ecstatic because I did not expect this to happen. The exams were a bit tricky but in the end, God helped me. It came as a surprise to me. I was expecting to get around 410 marks," said Warutere.

The learner wants to join Mang'u High School for his secondary education.

He would also want to pursue software engineering after he completes high school. 

Further, Warutere expressed gratitude to his parents and teachers for their guidance throughout the exam period.

A total of 1,406, 557 students sat this year's test. 

Some 8,523 candidates scored 400 marks and above while 352, 782 candidates scored between 300-399 marks. 

658, 278 learners got 200-299 marks out of 500, and 383, 025 scored 100- 199 marks.
