Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti has called on the Machakos Members of County Assembly to pass a bill that will see a street named after the late Rex Kanyike Masai.
“I want to call on MCAs who are here to pass a bill which will have one road in the County of Machakos named after Rex Masai,” she said.
Speaking during Rex's burial ceremony at Kamuthanga Secondary School, Wavinya said the young protester died like Muindi Mbingu, a Kamba freedom fighter who fought for the rights of people during the colonial era.
“Rex hails from the same area as Muindi Mbingu. We must have a street in his name as he will be remembered as a hero who paid the ultimate price to liberate Kenyans," she said.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka said Rex's death would not be in vain, saying he had contributed to change in governance.
The 29-year-old Rex was killed in Nairobi during demonstrations against Finance Bill 2024.
Rex, while taking part in the largely peaceful protest, was silenced by a bullet to his left thigh that caused excessive bleeding.
Other leaders who attended the burial were DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sufuna, Machakos Woman Rep Joyce Kamene and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, among others.
