An investigating officer has opposed the release of a suspect accused of violently attacking his ex-girlfriend, arguing that he poses a serious threat to her life.
In an affidavit filed in court, the officer stated that the accused, Cornel Ochieng’ Awuor, poses a death threat to his former partner, Frida Mokeira Moenga, who is said to be fighting for her life after sustaining severe head injuries, including a fractured skull.
According to court documents, Awuor allegedly attacked Moenga on December 24, 2025, in her bedroom at her home in Utawala, Nairobi, while armed with a hammer.
Moenga told investigators that she had been asleep in her house when the accused stormed in carrying a hammer, pounced on her and struck her on the head three times.
She screamed for help, but no one responded as it was the middle of the night. Moenga managed to escape and ran to her landlord’s house to seek help. When the landlord opened the door, she collapsed on the floor.
She was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where she received initial treatment before being discharged with a referral to see a neurological specialist at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Medical examinations later revealed that her skull had cracked and had swollen internally.
The complainant is still undergoing treatment and reportedly suffers from frequent dizziness and severe headaches following the attack.
Moenga further told police that after reporting the incident, the accused threatened to kill her.
The details are contained in an affidavit presented before Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Rotich at the Makadara Law Courts ahead of Awuor’s plea-taking on March 9.
Investigators also told the court that two months after the first incident, the accused allegedly returned to the complainant’s house on February 26 and threw her from the balcony of the second floor, causing multiple fractures to her limbs.
Awuor has since pleaded not guilty to the charges.
State Counsel Moureen Mwenesa informed the court that the investigating officer attached to Utawala Police Post had filed an affidavit opposing the suspect’s release on bond.
Mwenesa told the court that Awuor had gone into hiding after the first alleged attack and was only apprehended following the second incident in which he allegedly pushed the complainant off the balcony.
The case has been recorded as attempted murder.
“Awuor allegedly pushed the complainant from the second floor of a building, resulting in her sustaining multiple fractures. The victim remains admitted at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where she is receiving treatment for her injuries. The incident is currently under active investigation,” the affidavit states in part.
Investigators argue that the accused is a flight risk, noting that he had allegedly gone into hiding for more than two months and may abscond if released on bond.
However, the accused opposed the application to deny him bond, claiming that he continued to support the complainant financially despite their differences.
He told the court that the complainant was his girlfriend and that he had been providing for her rent and food, arguing that denying him bond would leave her in distress.
