The Ugandan government has dismissed claims that it has shut down internet ahead of the upcoming general election, calling the reports false and misleading.
Critics argue that limiting access to independent internet services could undermine communication, transparency and civic participation during the electoral period.
Uganda has imposed restrictions on the importation of Starlink equipment and similar devices barely a month before national elections on January 15, raising fears of an internet shutdown.
Ugandans will now require written permission from President Yoweri Museveni’s son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to import Starlink equipment.
