Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha leads Cape Verde to stunning nil-nil draw with Spain

Cape Verde’s historic FIFA World Cup debut against Spain delivered several memorable moments, but the standout was the performance of veteran goalkeeper Vozinha.

The 40-year-old produced a heroic display in Atlanta as Cape Verde held Spain to a 0-0 draw.

The European champions dominated possession and created numerous chances, but Vozinha made seven crucial saves to keep his side level.

His performance helped secure one of the most celebrated results in African football history.

The Blue Sharks defended with discipline throughout, absorbing pressure from one of the tournament favourites and holding firm to earn a point on their World Cup debut.

Behind the goalkeeper known across Africa as Vozinha is a story that stretches back to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, unexpectedly linking Argentina and Brazil.

Born Josimar Dias, he later revealed that his name was inspired by football legends.

“In the football world, I’m known as Vozinha. But I want to give a shout-out to Jorge Valdano and Josimar, the inspirations behind my name,” he said after the match.

His father, Ze Pedro, initially wanted to name him after Argentine striker Jorge Valdano, who starred in Argentina’s 1986 title-winning campaign alongside Diego Maradona.

However, other family members preferred Brazilian defender Josimar, one of the breakout stars of that tournament.

The result was the name Josimar Dias, with Vozinha becoming his widely used nickname later in his career.

The FIFA World Cup, organised by FIFA, is football’s premier international tournament, held every four years and watched by billions worldwide.

After his heroics against Spain, Vozinha said the moment fulfilled a lifelong dream. He has been Cape Verde’s first-choice goalkeeper for 14 years and was visibly emotional after the final whistle.

“I work hard all my life for this moment, for this dream,” he said. “A lot of generations in the past were dreaming of this, they didn’t achieve it. And now the dream has come true.”
