Residents of Noonkopir village in Kitengela are calling on the government to install electricity at a police post that has been operating in darkness.
They claim police officers are forced to use candles for lighting, raising concerns about security in the area.
“We find it very risky for officers to man a police station that does not have electricity. This place is not safe at all,” said Benjamin Kilonzo, a resident.
Residents say mugging, robberies and rape have become rampant in the estate.
The police post was constructed in 2015 using National Government Constituency Development Fund in collaboration with residents.
A spot check of the police post by The Standard paints a picture of a deserted structure with poor ventilation and no lighting.
“We are appealing to our area Member of Parliament, Kajiado East’s Kakuta Maimai, to intervene in this matter. He commissioned the facility and can help us secure electricity,” said Mary Muthoni, a resident.
Isinya Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Lakitari confirmed that officers were having a hard time manning a station without electricity.
However, he assured residents that security agents remain alert and are working day and night to control the situation.
