VIDEO: Wajir Woman Rep heckled with 'wantam' chants after chopper arrival at event

Political temperatures flared in Bute, Wajir North, after Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Abdi Jehow received a hostile reception from a section of residents during a visit to the area.

Videos circulating online show members of the crowd chanting "One Term", signalling dissatisfaction with her leadership ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The viral clip shows Jehow arriving in a black helicopter, where she was received by the area chief before being escorted to the venue alongside other women.

However, as the master of ceremonies led chants of "Tutam", a section of the crowd drowned them out with repeated chants of "One Term", overshadowing the planned welcome.

The incident came just days after Jehow embarked on what she described as a development tour of Wajir North Constituency, where she met elders, religious leaders, teachers, security officials, youth representatives and other community stakeholders.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the lawmaker said the visit was part of her ongoing constituency-wide development engagements under the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).

"I was delighted to meet with elders, religious leaders, teachers, security officials, youth, influential members of the community and other stakeholders as part of my ongoing development tour of Wajir North," she said.

Jehow added that Wajir North held a special place in her political journey and pledged to continue championing inclusive development in the area.

She also thanked residents for what she described as their warm hospitality, constructive discussions and contributions on the constituency's development priorities.

"Through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), under the Office of the County Woman Representative, we remain committed to ensuring that development reaches every corner of Wajir County and benefits every resident," she said.

Despite those assurances, the mood in Bute contrasted sharply with the message of unity and development contained in her earlier statement.

Jehow is no stranger to controversy.

A year ago, she sparked a storm after claiming that leaders from the North Eastern region are prepared to rig the 2027 elections in favour of President William Ruto.

"Sisi kama wabunge wa North Eastern, nikiongea kutoka Wajir, sisi maneno yetu ni fupi tu, two terms," Jehow said during a public address.

"Sisi tunangoja debe iletwe, hata kama hatutakuwa na votes, hata kama hatutakua na votes tutamwibia...hio si siri," she added, dismissing concerns over the region's relatively low voter turnout.

Her comments sparked fierce backlash on social media at the time, with many Kenyans questioning the integrity of the country's electoral process and calling for her censure.
