Degs: Using a bucket to take a bath was shocker

Degs, born Ndegwa, is a living example of the diversity of London’s music scene.

Though he now calls the UK capital home, his connection to Kenya runs deep. His mother, who hails from Kirinyaga, instilled a love for his Kenyan heritage which he claims is evident by his appreciation for family, community, and the incredible food.

His musical journey started in his teens, fueled by different range of genres. However, it was the raw energy and electrifying sound design of Drum & Bass that truly captured his imagination.

This genre, a melting pot of styles and a vibrant expression of UK underground culture, became his artistic playground.

Degs wears many hats – a vocalist, producer, instrumentalist and DJ who constantly pushes the boundaries of his craft.

His latest single, “Outlaw,” a collaboration with Bristol-based producer Hoax, showcases his talent on the world-renowned Hospital Records label.

His earliest memories of Kenya are filled with warmth. But one experience that sticks out vividly is the rolling blackouts that plagued Kenya in the 90s and early 2000s. While his mother grappled with the inconveniences, Degs, then a child, found a peculiar kind of adventure – showering in buckets with his brother and witnessing the resourcefulness and resilience of his Kenyan family.

“There were horrible blackouts in the 1990s and 2000s. We had to take a bath using a buckets because there was no power. Coming from England, that was a unique experience but as a child, I have to admit I fully enjoyed it! It was like a big adventure,” he says.

As an adult, Degs says he is still struck by the affordability of the transportation system. Beyond the sights and sounds, Degs is deeply touched by the Kenyan spirit of generosity.

Looking ahead, he is pouring his energy into his second album for Hospital Records. Promising to be more diverse than his debut, “Letters From Ndegwa,” this project reflects his artistic growth and exploration. But music isn’t his only focus.

He plans a return to Nairobi in September 2024, eager to connect with fans through live shows.
