Congolese music icon Fally Ipupa has been bestowed with one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s highest national distinctions after being elevated to the rank of Knight of the National Order of the Leopard.

The prestigious honour, conferred by President Félix Tshisekedi, is reserved for individuals whose achievements and service have significantly contributed to the nation’s development and international reputation.

In announcing the award, the Presidency commended Fally for his outstanding role in promoting Congolese culture and rhumba music across the world.

The 48-year-old singer, who rose to prominence as a member of the band led by Kofi Olomidé before establishing a successful solo career, described the recognition as a deeply emotional and proud moment in his life.

According to Fally, the distinction goes beyond personal accomplishment and serves as a tribute to Congolese music, culture and national identity.

He used the occasion to encourage young people to remain determined and pursue their ambitions regardless of their circumstances.

“Your starting point does not define your destiny. Work, believe, persevere. The world is ready to hear your voice,” he said.

Reacting to the honour on social media, the award-winning musician emphasized that his journey has been shaped by the support of an entire nation.

“This path has never been mine alone. It belongs to an entire people,” he wrote.

The recognition crowns an exceptional period in Fally’s career.

His latest album, XX, recently became the first project by an African artist to debut at the top of the French album charts.

He also made headlines after reportedly becoming the first Francophone African musician to sell out Stade de France on two consecutive nights.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential contemporary artists, he has spent more than three decades taking Congolese music to global audiences through his unique fusion of rhumba, soukous and modern African sounds.
