Tanzanian singer and songwriter Mimi Mars has officially released her debut album, 17, a 15-track project that arrives after two years of development and signals a significant milestone in her music career.

The album sees her delve into themes of love, heartbreak, healing and personal growth while blending several genres that have shaped her sound, including R&B, Afropop, Afrobeats and Bongo Flava.

For years, Mimi Mars has built a reputation through a string of singles and collaborations that showcased her vocal ability and songwriting style. With 17, she takes a more expansive approach, using a full-length project to tell stories drawn from different emotional experiences and stages of relationships.

Speaking about the album, she described it as a reflection of growth, vulnerability and new beginnings. According to her, the project captures a range of emotions, from romance and heartbreak to confidence and self-discovery.

17 represents growth, vulnerability, and a new beginning for me,” says Mimi Mars. “This album carries different emotions and real experiences — from love and heartbreak to healing and confidence. I wanted people to hear every side of me.”

The album opens with Niahidi, a Swahili love song centred on commitment and loyalty.

As the project progresses, listeners are taken through different moods and perspectives on relationships, with tracks such as Tonight, Forever, Let Me Know, and Movie leaning into romantic themes, while songs like Far Away and Fever explore emotional conflict and regret.

One of the notable aspects of 17 is its collaborative lineup. Mimi Mars teams up with South African artists Cici and Lady Zamar, as well as rising artist Itare, giving the project a regional appeal beyond Tanzania.

Crazy, featuring Cici, combines East and Southern African musical influences in a song about the unpredictability of love.

Meanwhile, With You, featuring Lady Zamar, focuses on loyalty and companionship, while Fell In Love with Itare offers a more upbeat take on romance.

The album also includes lighter, dance-oriented tracks such as Coco, Gimmie, and Moyo Tissue, which showcase a more playful side of the singer and add variety to the listening experience.

The release comes at a time when female artists across East Africa are increasingly using full-length projects to establish their artistic identity and expand their reach beyond national borders.

For Mimi Mars, 17 represents her first comprehensive body of work and an opportunity to present a broader picture of her artistry.

The album's title, 17, appears to symbolise a new phase in her creative journey, with Mimi positioning the project as both a personal statement and a reflection of her evolution as a performer.
