Stranger Things, Peaky Blinders top list of TV shows shaping real-life fashion trends

A new global study has revealed the television shows that are most influencing everyday fashion choices, with Netflix’s hit sci-fi series Stranger Things emerging as the biggest style driver.

The research, conducted by menswear brand The Jacket Maker, analysed Google search data for outfit-related queries linked to popular TV shows. It found that viewers are increasingly turning to on-screen wardrobes for real-life style inspiration, with millions searching for clothing ideas based on their favourite characters.

At the top of the list, Stranger Things recorded a combined average of 21,639 monthly searches, making its retro-inspired wardrobe the most influential among audiences. The show’s blend of 1980s casual wear featuring denim jackets, graphic tees and vintage sneakers continues to shape youth fashion trends years after its debut.

In second place is the crime drama Peaky Blinders, with 12,993 monthly searches. The series’ sharply tailored suits, wool coats and signature flat caps have cemented its influence on modern menswear, particularly for formal and semi-formal styling.

Dark teen drama Wednesday follows closely in third place, generating 11,592 monthly searches. Its gothic aesthetic, led by monochrome uniforms and minimalist styling, has fuelled a wave of searches for “Wednesday outfits,” particularly among younger viewers.

Period romance Bridgerton ranks fourth, driven by continued fascination with Regency-era fashion, corsets and elegant gowns. Meanwhile, iconic fashion-centric series Sex and the City completes the top five, proving that its early 2000s wardrobe still resonates strongly with modern audiences, especially in the US.

The top 10 list also features Emily in Paris, Euphoria, Empire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Pretty Little Liars, reflecting a broad mix of fashion influences ranging from bold experimental looks to nostalgic teen style.

According to the study, the rankings were compiled using search volumes for terms such as “outfits,” “fashion” and “clothes” associated with each show across the UK and US markets.

Industry commentary from The Jacket Maker suggests that viewers are not necessarily copying full outfits, but instead drawing inspiration from specific elements such as jackets, colour palettes or layering styles.

“Most people are not watching a show and thinking, ‘I want that exact outfit,’” said Syed Obaid, CEO and co-founder of The Jacket Maker. “They notice a jacket, a coat, or the mood of a wardrobe, and bring that into their own style.”

He added that outerwear plays a key role in translating on-screen fashion into everyday wear, with coats and jackets often acting as statement pieces that define an entire look.

The findings highlight how television continues to shape global fashion culture, with audiences increasingly using streaming content not just for entertainment, but also as a source of style inspiration that filters into real-life wardrobes.

From nostalgic 80s Americana to modern gothic minimalism and polished period elegance, the study shows that TV wardrobes are becoming as influential as traditional fashion runways in shaping what people wear today.
