Protest baddies: Gen Z ladies protesting in style

Fearless, tribeless and headless is the name of the game in the nationwide protests that have been going on for the past three weeks.

These protests may seem random, but there’s some degree of meticulousness, from the agenda down to the smallest detail such as clothing, so can we take a moment and talk about the fashion baddies?

Yes, you may have noticed or read the obvious dress codes being passed around, ranging from a white shirt, all black or colourful/playful outfits, but if you watch any Get Ready with Me video on social media you will notice some basics that the baddies are leaning towards for their comfort while exercising their democratic rights. 

So let us explore a few of them:

Comfortable clothing

As you will notice, most ladies are wearing very comfortable clothing, specifically activewear, ranging from sweats, tights, t-shirts and spandex turtlenecks. During these times, baddie clothes like crops, miniskirts and hot pants won't cut it. You need to cover up as much as possible and most, if not all, of the ladies have understood the assignment.

Running shoes

This is perhaps the most important starter pack for any baddie; running shoes. Yes, you would love to slay in those crocs, heels and sambas, but for the streets, trainers are the best bet. You need to be fast and ready to move at all times and a pair of running shoes will definitely get the job done best.

The Kenyan flag

What better way to show your patriotism than incorporating the Kenyan flag into your outfit? While keeping with the theme of the day, the baddies have made sure to fly the Kenyan flag high to ensure that the message is not misconstrued.

Bandana

While some are wearing the usual face masks to ward off the gas, Amnesty International says it is best to cover your mouth and nose with a bandana and most baddies were right on track. Soaking their bandanas in water beforehand helps them breathe when exposed to the chemicals.

Fanny pack

This is definitely not the time for a bulky tote or fancy handbag, most baddies show up with fanny backpacks and sling bags that are easy to access and protect while protesting. These bags also contain the bare essentials such as their ID cards, mobile phone, some cash and of course lip gloss to stay moisturised. 

Light accessories

The ultimate baddie knows she needs a baseball cap, beret, bucket hat or turban as a wig is not appropriate for protesting. Also, a pair of goggles to protect your eyes, as sunglasses are likely to fall off or not work as effectively. 

No make-up look

What makes a baddie a baddie is definitely the bold make-up look, amazing outfits and well-manicured nails, but as you will notice, most have taken to the streets bare-faced and with only sunscreen to get them through the day. 

Water

Hydration is key! Not only do they need the water to keep them cool, but it will definitely come in handy when they need to wash off the tear gas and other chemicals from their faces and bodies.
