Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, responded to some customer queries in light of the intermittent network connectivity experienced in several parts of the country.

This came just hours after Kenyans had complained of slow internet speeds and lagging on some mobile applications affiliated with the telco giant.

Ndegwa apologised for the network outage saying there was reduced bandwidth on some cables that carry internet traffic in and out of the country but the issue was being worked on.

“I want to start by sincerely apologising for the network outage that started on June 25, 2024. This outage was occasioned by reduced bandwidth on some cables that carry internet traffic.

“Please note that this did not only affect Safaricom but also affected the whole industry. We are doing everything to ensure that we give you the service that you deserve,” he said.

Finance Bill

Ndegwa also shed light on the contentious Finance Bill saying, Safaricom, like many other corporates, presented its views to the government as part of the public participation process and this was well-documented.

He, however, dismissed claims that the company shared private data with authorities, saying it strictly adheres to the terms of data privacy.

“Safaricom does not disclose customer information or their location. We adhere to the laws of the land in terms of data privacy and we will continue to do so.

“We are deeply rooted in Kenyan society and we believe in the resilience of Kenyan people,” he said.

Adding: “Kenyan people are known to bounce back from any challenge and I am sure we will bounce back better.”

Ndegwa also lauded those who went to the streets to exercise their civic right by demonstrating peacefully and condoled with families and friends of those who lost their lives when the protests turned chaotic.
