U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has voiced her concern over the escalating violence in Kenya amidst ongoing nationwide protests.

The demonstrations, driven by discontent over the recently passed Finance Bill 2024 and the associated economic hardships, have been met with severe police action.

In a statement released earlier today, Rep. Omar condemned the use of live ammunition, excessive force, and the targeting of journalists by Kenyan authorities.

"Reports of police using live ammunition, employing excessive force, targeting journalists, and forcibly disappearing protesters are deeply troubling and must be immediately addressed," she said.

Rep. Omar stressed the constitutional right to peaceful protest in Kenya and criticised the use of deadly force against civilians exercising their democratic rights.

"The right to peacefully protest is enshrined in Kenya's constitution and must be respected by authorities. The use of deadly force against civilians exercising their democratic rights not only violates basic human rights but also undermines Kenya's democratic foundations," she stated.

The Finance Bill 2024 has sparked widespread protests due to increased taxes and severity measures that many Kenyans believe will worsen their economic situation.

Demonstrations have erupted in major cities, with protesters demanding that the government reconsider the bill and find alternative solutions to the country's financial challenges.

In her statement, the congresswoman highlighted the role of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the current crisis.

She pointed out that the IMF's austerity measures have worsened the economic struggles faced by Kenyans, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations and potentially fueling social unrest.

"It's also crucial to recognize that the International Monetary Fund's austerity conditions have contributed to the economic hardships facing Kenyan citizens," she said.

Calling for peace and solidarity, Rep. Omar urged the Kenyan government to disclose the status and condition of those detained or disappeared during the protests.

She demanded an end to the use of excessive force and a commitment to meaningful dialogue to address the citizens' legitimate concerns.

"The Kenyan government must immediately disclose the location and condition of all those who have been taken into custody or disappeared, cease the use of excessive force, respect the right to peacefully protest, and continue to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the legitimate concerns of its citizens," she urged.

On Wednesday, June 26, President William Ruto declined to sign the Finance Bill 2024. He cited growing public pressure and the resulting anti-bill demonstrations over the past week as his reasons.

During the press briefing, Ruto conceded to the will of the Kenyan people and agreed to withdraw the bill entirely, with unanimous support from the lawmakers present at the State House.

However, Ruto's remarks have sparked debate over whether the president has the authority to withdraw the bill and the potential consequences of this action.

This debate is further complicated by the fact that parliament went on recess on Wednesday and will not resume regular sittings until Tuesday, July 23.
