A late-night fire gutted Machakos' mitumba market, destroying goods worth millions of shillings as authorities launched investigations into the cause and pledged support for affected traders.
Utumishi Girls Academy has reopened for Form Four students 34 days after a dormitory fire that killed 16 learners, with counselling and temporary accommodation measures in place.
“The DPP notes with concern the recent increase in reported incidents of arson and other acts of criminal conduct in educational institutions across the country.”
Three students from the list were questioned over the plot and gave the names of two of the would-be co-conspirators who were also arrested by police.
A section of religious leaders is now proposing that boarding schools be gradually abolished, even as several are now opting to send the learners home to avoid destruction.
"There is a standard safety procedure that the school was to adhere to. One side of the dormitory with an emergency exit door had been locked, and it's where we lost 10 students," said the CS.
