As the countdown to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) gathers steam, Kenya's Local Organising Committee (LOC) has released a list of banned items aimed at ensuring a safe and vibrant experience for fans at all stadiums.

The safety alert, prepared by the LOC CHAN Safety & Security Department, outlines six categories of items strictly prohibited during the continental football tournament.

Top on the list is a zero-tolerance policy on illegal drugs, including narcotics and stimulants. Only medically necessary substances will be allowed-and likely under strict verification. The message is clear: come for football, not a high.

In a bid to protect the integrity of communications and broadcasts, the LOC has also outlawed the use of signal-blocking devices. These include electronic, musical, or telecom equipment capable of jamming signals or disrupting IT systems.

This move targets not only potential tech mischief-makers but also ensures uninterrupted streaming and media transmission.

Noise-making devices, once a staple of African football festivities, are also banned. Items such as vuvuzelas, megaphones, whistles, loudspeakers, and drums will not be allowed into the stadiums.

While some fans may see this as a killjoy move, organisers say it is all about safety, inclusivity, and ensuring everyone can enjoy the matches in peace.

Hungry fans will have to buy their snacks and meals inside the stadium as the LOC has banned all commercially packaged takeaway food from outside. However, exceptions will be made for medical reasons and for food intended for infants. So, unless it is baby formula or medically prescribed, that burger or pilau pack will have to stay at home.

Organisers are also keen on keeping CHAN 2024 a politics-free zone. Flags or banners that touch on politics, race, gender, religion, nationality, or personal identity are prohibited. This aims to create an environment that celebrates African unity through sport, rather than division.

With the slogan "Africa Is Coming Home - Let's Show Up!", the LOC is calling on fans to come ready to celebrate the beautiful game in style-but without the chaos.

Co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, CHAN 2024 marks a historic moment for East Africa and is expected to attract thousands of fans across the region.
