Messi spoils Argentina stars with custom gift packages after World Cup run

Lionel Messi has delighted football fans off the pitch after presenting his Argentina teammates with personalised gifts to mark their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The gesture came to light when Kelci-Rose Bowers, an English footballer and partner of defender Marcos Senesi, shared a video on social media showcasing the items brought home from the national team camp.

Holding a customised caramel-coloured carry bag adorned with Senesi's name, the Argentine Football Association crest, and the World Cup trophy, Bowers revealed the package to her followers.

"I have to show you guys something really cool," Bowers said in the video.

"Marcos brought this bag from the camp. It also has his name written on it. This is his mate set. Messi gave this gift to all the players."

Inside the tailored bag sat a gold-colored Stanley thermos featuring Messi's personal brand logo, alongside a complete traditional mate set consisting of a gourd cup, yerba mate leaves, and a metal straw.

Mate, a caffeine-rich herbal beverage made from the dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant, holds deep cultural significance across South America.

In Argentina, preparing and sharing mate is a daily ritual associated with friendship, community, and team bonding.

National team players frequently carry their individual sets to training sessions, hotel rooms, and match venues throughout major tournaments.

This is not the first time the 39-year-old captain has commissioned luxury gifts for his squad.

Following Argentina's 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, Messi famously ordered 35 personalised 24-karat gold iPhones for every player and member of the backroom staff, a gift suite estimated at over Sh25.9m ($200,000).

The presentation of the mate sets followed a gruelling 2026 World Cup campaign in North America, where Argentina reached the final before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain after extra time.

Despite missing out on back-to-back World Cup titles, Messi recorded eight goals and four assists during the tournament, cementing the strong unity that has defined the squad during his tenure as captain.
