For much of his career, Guardian Angel has built his music around a simple but enduring message: faith can carry people through life’s most difficult seasons. It is a message he understands intimately.

Born Audiphaxad Peter Omwaka in Butere, Kakamega County, and raised in Nairobi’s Kibera slums, Guardian Angel’s journey has been anything but ordinary.

Long before he became one of Kenya’s most recognisable gospel voices, he was a young boy navigating hardship and uncertainty while holding on to dreams that often seemed far beyond reach.

Today, however, the award-winning gospel singer, songwriter and instrumentalist finds himself reflecting on that journey through his newly released EP, Favour, a five-track project that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a testimony of grace, resilience and gratitude.

The EP arrives at a stage in Guardian Angel’s life when he has experienced both public celebration and intense scrutiny.

Over the years, he has become known not only for hit songs such as Nadeka, Liwe Liwe, Pendo, Ebenezer, Mungu Anakumbuka and the award-winning collaboration Wakati wa Mungu with Tanzanian gospel star Paul Clement, but also for the public conversation surrounding his marriage to Esther Musila.

Their relationship attracted widespread attention and criticism, largely because of their age difference. Social media trolls questioned the marriage, while critics speculated about its longevity.

Yet Guardian Angel remained steadfast, choosing not to engage in prolonged public battles and instead allowing time and faith to tell his story.

In many ways, Favour feels like a continuation of that outlook.

The project is centred on grace, hope, love and God’s faithfulness through every season of life. Rather than focusing on spectacle, he leans into personal reflection, offering messages that feel relatable to listeners navigating their own struggles and victories.

At the heart of the EP is the title track, Favour, which he describes as “a joyful declaration of God’s blessings and open doors.” The song celebrates the kind of grace that cannot be explained by luck or coincidence, crediting every breakthrough to God’s hand.

Through lively melodies and uplifting rhythms, he presents favour as something visible in every aspect of life.

That spirit of thanksgiving continues in Kupendwa, one of the EP’s most personal moments. Here, he reflects on “the comfort and healing that comes from being loved by God.”

Looking back on life’s challenges, he speaks of finding restoration, peace and meaning in moments that once felt overwhelming.

“There is a sense of amazement throughout the song,” he says, “as I look back on how far I have come and recognise God’s faithfulness through it all.”

The result is a song that feels equally like worship and testimony.

On Unastahili, he shifts fully into praise. The worship-centred track focuses on God’s greatness, power and goodness, creating a congregational atmosphere that invites listeners into collective reflection.

“It is a moment of giving God the glory He deserves,” he says.

The message broadens further on Love, where the singer moves beyond personal experiences to address the world around him.

The song encourages compassion, understanding and kindness, reminding listeners that many people carry silent struggles that are often invisible to others. It is a gentle challenge against judgement and a call to show empathy, particularly to those navigating difficult seasons.

The EP closes with Amekuona, a comforting anthem for anyone who feels unseen, unheard or discouraged. He describes it as a reminder that “God knows people personally, understands their struggles and hears every prayer, even the silent ones.”

It encourages patience and trust, emphasising that God’s timing remains constant even when life feels uncertain.

Beyond music, Guardian Angel’s life has continued to evolve. Away from the stage and studio, he has developed a passion for farming, a venture he often describes as both a business and a source of personal fulfilment.

He also continues to invest in the future of gospel music through his record label, Seven Heaven Music, which supports emerging artistes. As a guitarist, pianist and mentor, he remains committed to nurturing the next generation while expanding his own creative journey.

Looking back, it is remarkable to consider how far he has travelled from the streets of Kibera. The young student who became the first Kenyan to win 10 awards at the National High School Music Festivals has grown into an artiste whose music resonates across East Africa.

Yet despite the awards, success and public recognition, Favour suggests that Guardian Angel’s greatest achievement may not be his fame but his ability to remain anchored in faith through every chapter of his life.
