Video of masked police officers escorting armed goons during protests angers Kenyans

A shocking video has surfaced, showing masked police officers driving alongside motorbike-riding goons brandishing clubs, weaving through crowds in the Central Business District.

The footage, which has left Kenyans stunned, captures an unsettling scene: police cars packed with officers rolling past as the thugs harass and rob demonstrators, raising suspicions of collusion.

It wasn’t the usual tear gas and arrests that have marked the anti-police protests over blogger Albert Ojwang’s death in custody, instead, it’s a chilling twist that’s sparked outrage and accusations of state-backed thuggery.

The protests, driven by fury over Ojwang’s alleged torture and killing in police custody, have taken a darker turn.

In one viral clip, a group of club-wielding goons target a young woman, snatching her phone as she pleads. Nearby, another video shows a man cornered by thugs, stripped of his belongings, and left cowering in a foetal position.

Angry protesters, some hurling stones, chased the attackers, shouting in frustration.

“They’re paid by the police or Governor Sakaja!” one voice yells in Swahili, echoing a growing sentiment that these goons are hired to disrupt the peaceful demands for justice.

The chaos didn’t end there. Another disturbing scene shows a man in a suit, likely heading to work, ambushed by six young men posing as bodaboda operators.

They rip his clothes, scatter his documents, rob him of his valuables and fled on motorcycles as a furious crowd gave chase.

In a separate clip, goons chanted “Ruto, Tano tena” (Ruto, five more years), clashing with the anti-police protesters’ calls for reform.

Kenyans are livid, with many taking to X to vent. “The bar is so low they’re paying youths to fight us,” one user posted.

“The police protect them while killing us. #EndPoliceBrutalityKE.” Another warned, “Armed goons robbing people with police support erodes trust. Stay safe.”Some protesters have fought back.

Videos showed crowds lynching goons and setting motorcycles ablaze, a desperate response to the violence.

Reports suggest these hired thugs, ferried into the city on droves of bodabodas, are snatching phones and wrecking property, allegedly shielded by police.

MP Peter Salasya condemned the “incompetence” of the National Police Service, while activist Hanifa Adan recounted being beaten and robbed by a goon, only to reclaim her phone with help from the crowd.
