Siaya Senator and ODM leader Oburu Oginga brought an unexpected blend of humour and warmth to the 21st National Prayer Breakfast at Safari Park Hotel, where he delivered a light-hearted and deeply personal tribute to his second wife, Judith Atieno.

The event, typically characterised by solemn prayers and high-level political reflection, took a lighter turn when Oburu departed from formal convention and openly introduced Judith as his second wife, a gesture that immediately set a relaxed tone and drew mixed reactions of surprise and amusement from the audience.

“Madam where are you? Walk faster, they will take this mic from me,” he joked, prompting laughter across the room as he encouraged her to join him on stage.

Addressing an audience that included President William Ruto, Chief Justice Martha Koome, and other senior leaders, Oburu blended humour with reflections on age, faith, and family life.

“Age is just numbers,” he said, before adding that his life is anchored in faith and surrounded by born-again family members who he described as his spiritual covering.

“I’m surrounded by people who are saved, so I’m protected by God. My wife in Kisumu is also a born-again and she’s always praying for me. My wife here who has prayed is also born-again, so I’m well protected,” he said, drawing laughter and applause.

His candid remarks briefly shifted the tone of the gathering, easing its usual political gravity with a personal and relatable touch.

In a graceful transition back to solemnity, Judith Atieno later stepped forward to lead the closing prayer, guiding the room from laughter back into reflection.

The moment quickly sparked conversation online, with many praising the senator for bringing authenticity and humour to a formal national platform.

Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga thrust into the center of national attention following the passing of his younger brother, the veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, in late 2025.

He was swiftly appointed as the interim leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and subsequently confirmed to the helm to maintain steady continuity for the political outfit.

His takeover has sparked widespread media focus and ongoing political debate across Kenya, driven by intense internal power struggles, resistance from younger party factions, and recurrent public speculation surrounding his health.
