President Ruto rewards Gor Mahia with Sh10 million after league triumph

President William Ruto has pledged Sh10 million to Gor Mahia and promised continued government support after hosting the Kenyan champions at State House to celebrate their 2025/26 FKF Premier League triumph.

The Head of State announced a ceremony honouring K'Ogalo's successful season and return to the summit of Kenyan football.

Addressing the players and club officials, Ruto praised the team's achievements before unveiling a financial reward for both the squad and the club.

"So, first of all, I'm going to help each one of you get out of here with Sh100,000. Then, Chairman, I will send you another Sh10 million," the President announced to cheers from the gathering.

He also assured the club that the government would continue supporting sports development and assist Kenyan teams representing the country on the continental stage.

The champions did not arrive empty-handed. Before receiving their gift, Ruto lightened the mood with a joke about a Gor Mahia jersey he had previously been given.

"One guy let me down. I told him to bring me a Gor Mahia jersey, but he brought me an XL. It looked like a sack on me, so I said no. Boss, you'll have to look for another one. Find me a large and send me two or three," he joked, drawing laughter from those in attendance.

Moments later, club officials presented the President with a framed Gor Mahia jersey signed by every player in the squad as a token of appreciation.

The State House celebration capped a memorable season for K'Ogalo, who reclaimed the FKF Premier League title after missing out the previous year. Their campaign was marked by consistency, discipline and crucial performances in key matches, including a Mashemeji Derby victory over AFC Leopards, which Ruto singled out as one of the defining results of the season.

The club also swept several end-of-season awards, with coach Charles Akonnor and midfielder Enoch Morrison among those recognised for their contributions.

With the league trophy secured and government backing promised, Gor Mahia will now shift focus to continental football, where they will carry Kenya's hopes in the upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
