Former Kilgoris Member of Parliament Gideon Konchellah

Former Kilgoris Member of Parliament Gideon Konchellah has died after suffering a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

His death was confirmed by several leaders, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and former Attorney General Justin Muturi. Current Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli led tributes, describing Konchellah as both his predecessor and successor in Parliament.

“I have sadly learnt of the death of Honorable Gideon Konchellah, former MP for Kilgoris Constituency. The late Konchellah was both my successor as well as my predecessor,” Sunkuli said.

“He served Kilgoris for 20 years, but the cruel hand of death has taken his life. May God rest him in eternal peace.”

According to John Ololtuaa, the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Basic Education, Konchellah had been unwell since November 2025 and had been undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

“This morning, we are very sad to announce the passing of Honorable Gideon Konchellah, the former MP for Kilgoris Constituency. Honorable Konchellah has been unwell since November 2025 and has been undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital. On May 30, 2026, he was admitted after developing an infection,” Ololtuaa said.

“On June 12, 2026, he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away at 4 a.m. His body lies at Lee Funeral Home. On my own behalf and on behalf of my family, I convey my sincere condolences to his family and the people of Kilgoris for the loss of a respected leader and patriarch.”

President William Ruto also paid tribute to the veteran politician, praising his dedication to public service and leadership.

“For nearly two decades, Hon. Konchellah gave himself to the people of Kilgoris and, through them, to our nation. He represented with dignity and understood that public office is, above all, a public trust,” the President said.

“His was a life measured not in the years he held office, but in the lives he touched and the faith his people placed in him.”

Konchellah served as the Member of Parliament for Kilgoris for nearly two decades between 2003 and 2022. During his political career, he represented the constituency under several political parties, including the Party of National Unity (PNU), the United Republican Party (URP), and later the Jubilee Party.

Beyond Parliament, he served as Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons in the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki between 2006 and 2007.

During his tenure, he oversaw the implementation of the Refugee Act of 2006, a landmark law that established a legal and humanitarian framework for the registration and protection of refugees in Kenya, replacing provisions under the colonial-era Control of Aliens Act.

Ahead of the 2022 General Election, Konchellah stepped down as Kilgoris MP to pursue the Narok Senate seat. However, his bid was unsuccessful.

Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders, constituents, and political allies, many of whom have remembered him as a seasoned legislator whose influence helped shape politics in Narok County and beyond.

He leaves behind a legacy of public service spanning nearly two decades in Parliament and government.
