DR Congo makes stylish World Cup entrance in viral leopard inspired outfits

The Democratic Republic of Congo touched down in the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making a memorable entrance in striking leopard-inspired outfits that paid tribute to the team's famous nickname, The Leopards.

Arriving in Houston ahead of their long-awaited return to football's biggest stage, the Congolese squad turned heads with their distinctive formal travel attire, which drew inspiration from the leopard a powerful national symbol and an emblem closely associated with the country's football identity.

The players stepped off the plane wearing tailored black suits with bold leopard-print panels across the jackets. Crisp white shirts, black ties and polished dress shoes completed the formal look, while matching leopard print travel bags ensured the theme carried through every detail.

The outfits were created by Congolese designer Alvin Junior Mak and carried a deeper meaning than simple fashion. Alvin says the design was inspired by their heritage, culture and collective ambition.

"The design pays tribute to the country's famous nickname, Les Léopards, while also recognising the influence of La Sape, the celebrated culture of elegant dressing associated with both Congo-Brazzaville and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this creation celebrates those who dare to dream bigger and proudly carry the colours of a nation," wrote Alvin.

DR Congo, who are preparing for their first FIFA World Cup appearance since competing as Zaire at the 1974 tournament, was forced to alter their preparations significantly after an Ebola outbreak in the country last month.

The outbreak prompted the cancellation of a planned pre-World Cup training camp on home soil, with the team instead relocating to Belgium to continue their preparations.

A scheduled warm-up match against Chile in Spain was also called off amid concerns surrounding the potential spread of the virus, adding another layer of disruption to an already complicated road to the World Cup.

The squad eventually travelled from Paris to Houston on Thursday after spending three weeks in Belgium, where they completed an isolation period required before entering the United States.

The Leopards will be based in Houston for the start of the competition, where they will play their first Group K match on 17 June against Portugal. DRC are then scheduled to head to Guadalajara in Mexico to face Colombia on 23 June before playing Uzbekistan in Atlanta on 28 June.
